Minnesota is the Shire
A one person storytelling show written and produced by theater artist and educator Seán McArdle. It’s about my experiences as a Minnesotan, how our history and culture resemble that of The Shire in many ways, and how we all just lived through The Scouring. Premiering this August 8th-15th at the Barbara Barker Center for Dance as part of the Minnesota Fringe Festival!
Minnesota survived the scouring of the shire
In the penultimate chapter of The Return of the King, our Hobbits return to a Shire that has been corrupted and overtaken by a militarized police force, led by a fascist government. Businesses are shuttered, people are hiding in their homes, and emboldened violent Shiriffs act with corrupt impunity, terrorizing the community.
The returning quartet of hero Hobbits sound the alarm, rouse the populace, and rout the interlopers from their midst through direct action and resistance, rescuing their community from outside forces who tried and failed to break the spirit of the People of The Shire.

I’m printing and customizing 6 of these Lucky 13 articulated Dragons as a fundraiser for my one-person Minnesota Fringe Festival show, Minnesota Is The Shire! Each one is 3D printed, hand assembled, and detailed by me. Your purchase of a Dragon will help to cover the costs of production and help me to attend the Westmoot conference by the Tolkien Society here in Minneapolis!
